Things I’m going to miss

As my departure date draws nearer and nearer it has made me think about all the things I’m going to miss so I thought I’d share it with you all here.

1. My family

My family

I think I’d be told off for not putting my family first on this list, but out of everything in this world I really will miss my parents and my brothers. When things go well they’re there to share all the fun and excitement, and when things go bad they’re there to help me through it. I’m going to miss playing Super Smash Bros on the Wii with my brothers and them teasing me about how bad I am at it. I’m going to miss my dad – who’s going to save me when there’s a busted light bulb or there’s a huge spider in my room? I’m going to miss telling my mum about my day and all the gossip that I’ve heard, but I guess that’s why they invented Skype, right?

2. The Tube

Tooting Bec Underground Station

Yes, I know it sounds weird but I’m going to miss taking the Tube. It’s so easy to get around London via the Tube and I’ve been using it for the last 2/3 years to get to uni and it’s all too familiar, and dare I say, comforting at the same time. Sad to say this, but I know where to stand along the platform so that when I get off the train I’m right by the exit – only a true commuter has this skill. I’ll admit, taking public transport has made me more aggressive as I’ve often had to push and shove people to get on, just so that I was on time for my 9am Japanese class. I think it’s going to take me some time to get used to the orderly Japanese train system…

3. London

The Scoop - London Bridge

Having lived here all my life, I still find that there are places I haven’t been to and things I haven’t done yet. It is such a diverse city and I love that there are people from all over the world here – just down my road you can get Indian, Jamaican, Polish, Lebanese,  and Japanese food and this is all within walking distance! Each part of London has a different feel and I’m going to miss not being a part of it.

4. Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits near Tooting Bec station

I went to Japan for 6 weeks last year and (I know this is disgusting) but I have never been so constipated before in my whole life until I was in Japan. Fruits and vegetables are so expensive, not to mention unripe since they import it when it hasn’t ripened properly, so when it gets to the supermarket it looks a bit icky. I’ll admit I was in central Tokyo most of the time and since I’m going to be further out this year I’m sure I’ll be able to find a market or something, but it’s well known that fresh produce like fruits are not exactly cheap in Japan compared to London. If I’ve got space I’m going to load up my suitcase with dried prunes!

5. Documentaries on Channel 4 and other TV programmes

Tv guide - Great British Bake Off

This one is a bit weird and I know there are probably ways of streaming/downloading programmes from the UK in Japan but I’m not that tech savvy. But I love watching documentaries on Channel 4 – How not to get old, The men who made us thin, Bouncers, Educating Yorkshire – this channel is amazing. Love these programmes! Also currently airing is The Great British Bake Off and I’m not going to be here to watch it!!!!

Creating this list has made me realize how lucky I am and how much I take things for granted. Going to Japan will be the first time I’ll be living away from home since I’ve been commuting whilst at university here, and I’m genuinely scared but excited at the same time!

I LEAVE FOR JAPAN IN 2 DAYS!
